Message from Chair of APTalk

Here we are in the midst of winter and doesn’t it feel like spring?  And, speaking of spring – isn’t that summer I see just around the corner?  It’s true, summer is coming, and I know this not just because I tell myself so, but because I have already received registration reminders from the camps [...]

The “End of Summer Countdown” Begins

Very little annoys me more than being rushed through the seasons. I blame this entirely on retailers, who began bombarding us with back to school items two weeks ago. I have already received my winter LL Bean catalogue, September’s slew of magazines and, in a recent trip to Costco, faced a complete aisle already decked [...]

Jaxson’s Story

We have two children, our daughter is 5 and our son is 3 ½. We knew what to expect once Jaxson came along, all of the milestones he was supposed to reach and at what ages he should achieve them.  So I tried not to worry when he still didn’t have any first words or sounds [...]

Pake’s Story

Pake’s Story

06 July 2010

At two years old Pake was a master of destruction and escape.  Our lives were full of chaos.  While I was putting the garbage bag full of garbage back in the bin that he had taken out and dumped, he was flushing an entire roll of toilet paper.  I couldn’t keep up with the housework [...]

Brooklyn’s Story

Brooklyn’s Story

28 March 2010

Our oldest daughter Brooklyn was diagnosed with autism at 24 months old. When she was 4 ½ years of age we got the call that she would be starting IBI. At that time she was non-verbal, had the receptive language of 1 month old, no attending skills and her only method of communication was screaming with some occasional [...]

Alex’s Story

28 March 2010

Alex captured my heart the very first time I saw him, just ten minutes after he was born! He was my first grandchild and I loved holding him in my arms and just being with him. I am an active grandmother and delighted in being able to take my grandson a couple of times a [...]

Tavish’s Story

Tavish’s Story

28 March 2010

Tavish was our first child and as such, we had no frame of reference in terms of what “normal” development was for a baby.  In retrospect, Tav was displaying symptoms of autism from infancy, but how could we know? By the time Tavish was 12 months old, we started to realize that there was something wrong [...]

Our Purpose

Autism Parents Talking (APTALK) is a voluntary group of parents across Ontario that started in 2010 to provide a safe forum for parents to have productive dialogue about autism, and influence decision makers on how to improve the integrated system of supports and services for families of children with autism.

We welcome other parents on the Wait List, parent s with children receiving services through Direct Funding Option (DFO) or Direct Service Option (DSO), and those whose children are no longer in the program.

Our Three Guiding Principles

Parents from all regions across Ontario are equally welcome to participate in this forum.

Our children are the reason for our engagement and therefore their stories and perspectives will be the focus of our work and featured whenever possible.

All website content and associated activities of APTALK are respectful and positive in nature, and personal attacks against parents, clinicians, providers, elected officials or public servants are unacceptable as they do not foster respectable, productive dialogue.
